Friends in Need are Friends Indeed

Story of Michael's Tragedy with Happy Ending

The 37–year–old Michael is a well–known Belarusian doctor working in the intensive care unit of the Minsk Children Surgical Centre. The noble cause of saving children lives became his work and duty. Hundreds of children were brought back to life thanks to his everyday efforts. And suddenly everything has changed in the twinkling of an eye. On September 18, 2005 he had a terrible car accident that caused him severe injuries. Several operations and weeks of intensive treatment did not bring any tangible improvement in Michael's health condition. Michael's colleagues together with experts from the Minsk State Medical University did their utmost to stop the developing inflammation, but all their attempts were in vain. It was life and death situation. Time was running out, and Michael was within a hairbreadth of death. The last hope for recovery was intravenous antibiotic Polymixin B which is not registered in Belarus. Michael's relatives and friends' efforts to find the drug failed, too.

In this desperate situation Michael's wife Elena decided to appeal to the MJC Resource & Development Centre (R&D Centre) and JDC for help. Searches for the drug started immediately, and hope for Michael's recovery revived. But the situation further aggravated when it was discovered that in most of the countries this medicine is for hospital use only. At this despairing moment our partners from the Atlanta Jewish Healthcare International (JHI) , the world leader in healthcare services for the Jewish community, extended their helping hand. Shipment of the drug and having it released by the customs became only a matter of time. Within three days the vital medicine was delivered to Belarus. And it took the R&D Centre only one day to get Polymixin B through the customs and to bring it to the hospital.

Michael is getting better now. Hopefully, soon he will start walking again, and we shall see him at the Minsk Jewish Campus.

Elena said: “Without the JDC, R&D Centre and JHI's assistance I would probably have lost my husband, my children — their father, and our elderly parents — their son. Children, rescued by Michael, and their parents are thankful to you too, as will be the ones whom Michael will rescue in the future. Your help reminds me that there is no limit to what people can accomplish…”

On behalf of our Community we would like to thank JHI and personally Mr. Steven Kutner, as well as the Atlanta Jewish Community for their decisive action which turned a potential tragedy into a happy ending for Michael and his family.

Alevtina Babyna became Hesed client in 1998 when the recrudescence of polyarthritis in lower limbs put her on crutches. The pain was insufferable, so was the feeling of helplessness and irrelevance against her long previous life full of physical endurance.

At 73, he still is what his father had been all his life: dedicated communist and convinced internationalist. Named after Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx’s pal and accomplice in their abortive attempts to overthrow the reign of misappropriated surplus value, he still mourns the USSR and blames those who emigrate for a better living in Israel, in the USA or, even worse, in Germany.
