«Shabbathon of Time»

A two–day–long Shabbathon for madrichim participating in the project “Youth Leadership” of the Jewish Community Center “Emunah” was held in a picturesque place of the recreation center “Alesya”. Both young leaders who have great volunteer experience in different projects and studios of the Community and guys recruited into the “School for Young Leaders” in 2008–2009 took part in it.

30 participants spent two days in the atmosphere of knowledge. Much is to be learned to work with different people and in different spheres successfully. The guys had a lesson with a teacher of singing, together with the pedagogue they learned Jewish and Holiday songs. They also participated in a workshop by the popular TV anchorwoman T. Lisitskaya who taught the young leaders how to make an interview (putting questions, organizing long conversation during peulah — educational and social activity, etc.); a workshop on hadracha (leadership and activism) by V. Elfimov. A. Bobrova, an actress of the Drama Theatre, taught the guys basics of acting. N. Skoroded showed the guys some new methods of work with smaller kids.

The young leaders talked to a psychologist about life priorities and spiritual values of a person, learned how to behave in different situations and in a group. This conversation helped them to see some of their usual actions in a new light. Lesson with a teacher of plastique gave madrichim an ability to relax, feel more at ease and free themselves from complexes.

The young leaders enjoyed 2 lessons on Jewish history and traditions held by V. Akopyan (“Welcoming Hanukkah”) and I. Abramovich (“Jewish Leaders”).

Madrichim called the event the “Shabbat of Time”: … «time spent here helped us a lot; we had a chance to learn and do a lot and to feel the atmosphere of warmth and support that would inspire us on weekdays.»

The Shabbathon was very informative and vivid at the same time. It started off preparation for a new family camp season and gave a chance to exchange experience and to set new areas of work in the “School for Young Leaders”.

Final feedbacks showed that madrichim enjoyed the seminar greatly. The young leaders noted that the lecturers and teachers were real professionals and expressed their gratitude to the Ginsburg Family who supported the seminar.

At 73, he still is what his father had been all his life: dedicated communist and convinced internationalist. Named after Friedrich Engels, Karl Marx’s pal and accomplice in their abortive attempts to overthrow the reign of misappropriated surplus value, he still mourns the USSR and blames those who emigrate for a better living in Israel, in the USA or, even worse, in Germany.
